This high-CFU, hypoallergenic blend of 10 certified probiotic species is formulated for individuals over the age of 60 years to maintain a healthy, balanced, and diverse gastrointestinal microbiota.† Microorganisms consistently present in the gut are termed the “core microbiota.” In adults, the core microbiota remains remarkably stable unless disrupted by environmental exposures, diet, or medications. However, aging is associated with changes in the composition and diversity of the microbiota, which have been correlated with increased frailty in elderly populations. The age-related decline in immune function along with the prevalence of chronic systemic inflammation in older populations have been linked to alterations in the gut microbiota.
Most studies reveal that with advancing age there are reductions in numbers and diversity of Bifidobacterium species, which normally help modulate immune function. In addition, there is a reduction in Faecalibacterium prausnitzii and other producers of butyrate. The decrease in butyrate production, and an increase in the amounts of branched-chain fatty acids, phenols, and ammonia, indicate a shift in gut microbial activity from sugar fermentation to unhealthy putrefactive metabolism. Along with the loss of beneficial species, many elderly individuals have an increased number of opportunistic bacteria. Under certain circumstances, these microbes may escape surveillance, overtake mutualistic commensal species, and induce undesirable changes affecting immune function.

Ther-Biotic® Senior Formula is recommended for older individuals wishing to maintain or restore a balanced core microbiota and support normal immune and gastrointestinal function.† The probiotics are provided in capsules with InTactic® technology to protect the microorganisms from degradation by stomach acid.
As a dietary supplement take one capsule daily with food or as directed by a healthcare practitioner. Capsules may be pulled apart and nutrients taken separately.
